A new sewing project

So, i wanted to make Tex a little outfit for his blessing...well I guess it won't be very little considering how HUGE he is. ;-) (*Yes, I know. Sad we haven't blessed our 6 month old yet. It's hard to make it to 8oclock church on time, and someone has been sick on fast sunday..yadda yadda...

But anyway...I want to try and sew this for Tex. I saw it on ebay a few weeks ago, and lost it. ;-( I forgot to put in a bid. It sold for $6 and I was willing to pay $15- bummer.

Anyway, it's pretty cute huh? It looks do-able right? Any pointers from seasoned sewers? I've never really sewn clothes before.

one suggestion: short sleeves for this sweaty climate- i think it would be cuter short sleeved too.

and you can do it! is it just a one piece or is it two- the picture looks like one.

I know you always go where no one dares to trod...but I really think you should have some sort of pattern. Personally it would be a challenge for me:-) Cute though...and I agree on the short sleeves.

It's really cute! Maybe you can save yourself the hassle and find another one just like it for 6 bucks. It wold be totally worth it to me. A Mom's time is valuable and if it's that cheap it seems worth it to me.

i agree with the above comment.

It will be very hard to do without some sort of pattern. That kind of stuff is really hard to get the fit and shape right unless you are a very skilled pattern maker and you can make your own pattern ( which i can't do very well). That being said it's always a good thing to try and see what you can do.

I would find a pattern that i like for a short sleeved shirt and one that I like for shorts/pants for an infant boy, and modify/alter it however you want it to look and fit, you can even attach it and make it a one piece.

That way you will have a base to start from and that will make it much easier.

just my thoughts. Good luck and have fun!

I used this pattern for my boys ones- http://www.simplicity.com/Search.aspx?SearchTerm=5813&x=19&y=13

I made them without any lining and they came out ok which is amazing for my lack of sewing skills. You can see the finished product here... http://christinaandnilesh.wordpress.com/2009/05/06/blessing-outfit-wishlist-item/ and here... http://christinaandnilesh.wordpress.com/2009/07/27/tylers-blessing/

Good luck!

Oh and baby blessings don't have to be on fast Sunday... everyone just seems to think that for some readon. We did our second sons on the 3rd Sunday.

baby blessings don't even have to take place in church! you can do it at home.

and you can do it!! i'm with the others, it may harder than it seems to do it without a pattern. but it there's a will, there's a way!! do a test run first for sure in some muslin or something, for measurements and whatnot.

go, matti, go!!

Hey if you checked out my blog you've seen my latest sewing project...$40 later I don't love it. My suggestion, unless there is some emotional element that you want to have made the outfit that he gets blessed in... I would buy it FOR SURE...especially if you were about to get it for $6.
However, if you really want to I would say make sure you block out time, cut precisely, pre wash and iron your fabric and pattern, and get a diet coke.

I had fun doing my project but I got the cheaper fabric and I REALLY wished I hadn't...any job worth doing is worth doing well....just make sure its worth doing :) Let me know what you decide.
